Shark finning is very popular due to “Shark Fin Soup” where the LIVE shark’s fins are cut off for the meat as the main protein in the dish. The shark is then thrown back into the ocean. Sharks need water flowing through their gills always to survive, so without their fins, they cannot swim nor breath and die within the minutes. On average, there are only 19 Shark attacks yearly and less than half being fatal. Lighting strikes and kills more than an average of 38 people a year and in 1996 STATED BY National Geographic, toilets injured 43,000 Americans while in that year sharks injured 13. Humans kill over 100 million sharks yearly. This puts these top predictors in an extremely high risk of extinction which is exactly what’s happening.
